With some nine million tons of Auto Shredder Residue (ASR) going to landfill each year, recyclers are increasingly mining this stream to remove all metal content. Recovering fines and ultra-fines from ASR is becoming standard practice for processors seeking to get maximum return from their material.

The challenge, however, has been reclaiming and cleaning these fines to create marketable metal. General Kinematics has brought a proven processing methodology capable of delivering consistent, reliable, industrial-scale production to the industry.

The GK VIBRA-DRUM® Grinding Mill

General Kinematics VIBRA-DRUM® Grinding Mills have been used in a range of applications in the mining and mineral industries. Over several decades of operation, they have proven consistently reliable, offering continual performance and low operating costs.

The Rod Mill is an extension of this product line employing in-mill grinding rods that deliver consistent throughput and material sizing for the metals recovery business.

Exceptional grinding performance is the result of the VIBRA-DRUM® natural frequency design. A sub-resonant, two-mass drive and spring system alternately stores and releases grinding power. Once in motion, additional energy is only needed to aid material movement to overcome frictional losses.

The rod media that effects material liberation is specifically designed for metals recovery. Its agitation within the mill results in a faster, more efficient grinding action. As the mill vibrates, the continual rotational movement of its rod media uses the principle of impact grinding, which causes clean breaking and does not coat the metals.

Getting the Metal Fines

The mill is used to recover fines and ultra-fines after eddy current and “metal finder” treatment. This material is comingled with glass and stone, and its size prevents reclamation using other technologies.

With the GK VIBRA-DRUM® Grinding Mill, this material is fed into a metering feeder to appropriately introduce it into the mill. As it passes through the mill, the glass, stone and other contaminants are ground to a powder. The metals pass through the mill a bit flattened, but intact.

Upon exiting the mill, the material flow passes over a vibratory screening deck. The minerals pass through while the metals travel over. The metals stream is clean of contamination and ready for sale.
